Collisionless Plasma Flow over a Conducting Sphere

چکیده
A nonlinear interaction between the whistler mode wave packet and resonantparticles is considered. An evolution of the packet’s shape is investigated in detail. Nonlinear effects produced by the interaction of whistlers with resonant particles have been discussedin a large number of papers (e.g. Roux and Solomon, 1970; Coriniti et al., 1971; Bud’ko ef al., 1971).However, either packets with rather broad spectrum to which random phase approximation is applicable,or monochromatic plane waves of infinite length were considered. In the present paper we deal with whistlermode (W.M.) packets, which have such a narrow spectrum, that they cannot be treated in the randomphase approximation. For experimental evidence for the significance of such cases see. e.g., Coroniti ef al.“)Our results are also applicable to VLF waves, radiated by transmitters and propagating along the geo-magnetic field lines in the upper ionosphere and magnetosphere. The numerical investigation of particle trajectories in W.M. packet was performed by Ashour-Abdalla.‘P)We use an analytical asymptotic method which permits us to elucidate some new features of nonlinearevolution of the packet in stable and unstabIe plasmas.

Ion Collection by a Sphere in a Flowing Plasma: 3. Floating Potential and Drag Force
The interaction of an ion-collecting sphere at floating potential with a flowing collisionless plasma is investigated using the particle in cell code SCEPTIC. The dependence of floating potential on flow velocity for a conducting sphere is found to agree very well with the OML approximation, which ignores the asymmetry in the plasma potential. But the charge, even on conducting spheres and at z...
متن کاملSteady-state magnetohydrodynamic plasma flow past conducting sphere
An analytic solution to the problem of strongly magnetized plasma flow past a smooth, conducting sphere is considered. The magnetic field is taken to be uniform at very large distances and the sphere is assumed to be unmagnetized. In addition, the flow speed is assumed to be subsonic and super-Alfvénic. It is shown that a steady state solution is possible only if the frozen-in condition can be ...
متن کاملField-aligned magnetohydrodynamic bow shock flows in the switch-on regime Parameter study of the flow around a cylinder and results for the axi-symmetrical flow over a sphere
A parameter study is undertaken for steady symmetrical planar field-aligned MHD bow shock flows around a perfectly conducting cylinder. For sets of values of the inflow plasma β and Alfvénic Mach number (MA) which allow for switch-on shocks, a numerical solution is obtained which exhibits a complex bow shock shape and topology with multiple shock fronts and a dimpled leading front. For paramete...
متن کاملElectron collection by a negatively charged sphere in a collisionless magnetoplasma
Easy-to-evaluate approximate formulas are presented for the repelled-species current collected by a spherical body in a collisionless, magnetized plasma, valid over the full range of ratio of Larmor radius to sphere radius. The form is an appropriate average of the lower and upper bounds obtained by prior analytic arguments. This formulation enables rapid evaluation of the floating potential in...
متن کاملIon Collection by a Sphere in a Flowing Plasma: 1. Quasineutral
The spatial distribution of collisionless ions collected by a spherical object of radius much larger than the Debye length, in a flowing plasma, is calculated using a particle-in-cell code. The results provide the first rigorous theoretical calibration of a “Mach probe” in a plasma with negligible magnetic field. They are also applicable, for example, to spacecraft-plasma interactions. Ion to e...
